I don’t think I have ever shown this work publicly before. It dates back to my student years, when I was working in a supermarket to support myself. One day, I noticed that a number of advertising vinyl banners were about to be thrown away, and I happily salvaged them.
At first, I had no clear idea of what I wanted to do with the material. Around that time, I was discovering the music of Stephan Micus, and inside two of the CD booklets were short quotes by Rumi and Lao Tzu. I was struck by how the arrangement of the words formed a shape that, in my view, visually embodied the essence of the quotes themselves. Using the salvaged vinyl, I made two works, each approximately two meters long. Every letter had to be manually adjusted, and the font modified. The letters were transferred by hand and individually cut by myself on a kitchen floor; the black paint was added afterwards. Unfortunately, I no longer have a photograph of the second piece. The text in this work reads: “The way that can be followed is not the true way” (Lao Tzu). The other piece, if I remember correctly, used the words: “There are ten thousand ways to bow and kiss the earth” (Rumi). |

I was invited to take part at the first edition of Rural Mural Residency in the village of Liubnitsa, Bulgaria. There are hundreds of abandoned buildings in my homeland of Bulgaria. The project's idea is to revive some of them with the help of selected international artists. What was once a school, now a sad ruin, became a canvas for us to explore and re-imagine with our visions and ideas.
